F-1 Visa
The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant student visa that allows international students to study in the United States at accredited institutions, such as universities, colleges, high schools, language schools, and vocational programs. It is intended for students enrolled in full-time academic or language programs. F-1 visa holders must maintain a full course load and are allowed to work on-campus part-time while studying. The visa also permits optional practical training (OPT) related to the student’s field of study upon program completion, offering valuable work experience in the U.S.
The F-1 visa program is tailored for professional pilot training in either airplane or helicopter, from zero flight hours to the initial flight instructor rating. It applies to both airplane and helicopter programs and may be extended if training is not completed due to valid reasons. Students on an F-1 visa are eligible for a vacation period of 26 weeks after completing one academic year of training, as per SEVIS regulations. After obtaining their Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) rating, students can apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), but they must secure a pilot job before applying. CPT is granted in three-month intervals, up to a maximum of 11.5 months. Ninety days before the end of CPT, students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Once they receive their Employment Authorization Document (EAD), the OPT period allows for 12 additional months of employment as a commercial pilot in the U.S. If a student does not begin employment within 90 days of the EAD start date, their visa will automatically be terminated, and they must leave the country. Students have 60 days to depart the U.S. after their EAD expires.
